Learning how to learn!
There are several effective dog training methods for teaching your puppy their basic vocabulary.
I like to teach in the most efficient manner possible, so I combine a bunch of priorities into a single exercise.
1. We want to tire our puppy out, and over the years I've found nothing more effective than making them use their brain! At the end of this feeding time exercise, Rusty will have a full belly and a tired brain. He'll sleep it off quietly in his crate.
2. We want to teach pups to be quiet in their crate. Reference ^^^^^ please.
3. We want to associate certain behaviors with words and pup getting rewarded, for use later in life. Here we're doing 5 important words.
4. We want pup to learn to ask for things with good behavior. Rusty gets paid when he makes good decisions here, and nothing when he makes incorrect ones.
5. We want our pup to learn that engaging with us pays big dividends! Rusty could play with a toy here, but he prefers interacting with me.
6. Finally, we want our pup to become experimental, meaning, when they try something isn't working - try, try again. As I mentioned in point #4, we want to limit "what works" to behavior we like, but we really want Rusty to learn how to push our buttons appropriately on his own. "Learning how to learn" is important for life.
This is just an excerpt of a 45 minute lesson with Rusty and his owners. There are two major points to pay attention to in this clip, not to mention the method I'm using to teach Rusty thing.
Listen for me to explain why we don't teach young pups to raise their paws and at the end for a review of where rewards show up in the exercise.
